Why not pump desalinated sea water up into our existing reservoirs all summer using the extra energy? Then use the summer extra renewable energy to separate hydrogen out of the water using electrolysis, storing the hydrogen in super-cooled underground caves? The long term solution to batteries is easy, grow trees.
